Recommended Action

Approve the purchase of six (6) additional and two (2) replacement Curotto Cans for Solid Waste Recycling Trucks from Tampa Crane & Body, Inc. in the amount of $200,000.00.

Background Information

The Curotto Can is an automated carrying can that is designed to pick up solid waste totes. The Curotto Cans have special attachments that dump the tote material into the can and then the can is lifted by the truck and emptied into the truck's hopper. The Curotto Cans provide flexibility in that they can be rotated between trucks to allow for maintenance or repair of the can without disabling the truck.

Tampa Crane & Body, Inc. is the sole source provider of Curotto Can sales, parts, service and warranty for the central Florida area including the City of North Port. Other similar equipment was considered for use, but those products use different configurations and technology that is more complex and not compatible with the can lifting mechanisms on the trucks currently in use. Additionally, after several years of using the Curotto Cans, Solid Waste operators and Fleet Management technicians have become proficient in the operation and repair and maintenance of this equipment. Maintaining the standardization of equipment has proven to be a significant improvement in operations and maintenance tasks and is recommended to continue using this product.

The purchase of the six new Curotto Cans is to equip the six new Recycling trucks that are expected to be delivered in March 2017.
