TITLE: Purchase of six (6) additional and two (2) replacement Curotto Cans for Solid Waste Trucks from Tampa Crane & Body, Inc. in the amount of $200,000.00
Recommended Action
Approve the purchase of six (6) additional and two (2) replacement Curotto Cans for Solid Waste Recycling Trucks from Tampa Crane & Body, Inc. in the amount of $200,000.00.
Background Information
The Curotto Can is an automated carrying can that is designed to pick up solid waste totes. The Curotto Cans have special attachments that dump the tote material into the can and then the can is lifted by the truck and emptied into the truck’s hopper. The Curotto Cans provide flexibility in that they can be rotated between trucks to allow for maintenance or repair of the can without disabling the truck.
Tampa Crane & Body, Inc. is the sole source provider of Curotto Can sales, parts, service and warranty for the central Florida area including the City of North Port. Other similar equipment was considered for use, but those products use different configurations and technology that is more complex and not compatible with the can lifting mechanisms on the trucks currently in use. Additionally, after several years of using the Curotto Cans, Solid Waste operators and Fleet Management technicians have become proficient in the operation and repair and maintenance of this equipment. Maintaining the standardization of equipment has proven to be a significant improvement in operations and maintenance tasks and is recommended to continue using this product.
The purchase of the six new Curotto Cans is to equip the six new Recycling trucks that are expected to be delivered in March 2017. The two replacement cans are to replace two older Curotto Cans (CIDs 71967 and 71968) identified based on their overall condition and expected useful life. The approved budget is to obtain nine (9) Curotto Cans (six (6) new and three (3) replacement) based on cost estimates provided in March 2016. Since that time, the price per unit increased, and budget now only allows for the purchase of only eight (8) units. A review of the condition of the third unit planned for replacement (CID 09237) determined that it can be retained until replacement next fiscal year while being used minimally as a spare unit.
