Background Information

The City of North Port Utilities Department owns and operates an extensive wastewater collection system within the City of North Port. NPU has received a Community Development Block Grants for the installation of eight diesel bypass pumps at lift stations.

NPU was awarded CDBG Mitigation funds under Department of Economic Opportunity Agreement No. IR027 to install permanent bypass pumps at Lift Stations 23, 25, 30, 37, 38, 39, 43 and 63. During Hurricane Irma, 90% of the City's lift stations were inoperable and required manual operation by NPU staff. Two shifts of staff were required to work 12-hour days to manually operate the pumps at the affected lift stations. Eventually, NPU was required to hire a contractor to assist with the manual pumping due to the strain that the workload put on the NPU staff.

The project will include the purchase and installation of bypass pumps for the eight lift stations noted above, servicing low-and-moderate income populations. These permanent bypass pumps will keep sewer service functional during adverse weather events and prevent or mitigate potential sanitary sewer overflows. This ensures the continued health and safety of the City's residents. This project will benefit 6,423 households. 58% of these households are considered low-and-moderate income.
