TITLE: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Sending a Letter of Support to Governor Ron DeSantis on Behalf of the City Commission in Support of the Continued Funding and Expansion of the Teen Court Program (Requested by Vice Mayor Langdon).
Recommended Action
I move to approve sending a letter of support on behalf of the City of North Port in support of the Teen Court Program to the Governor of Florida.
City Commission Options
Option 1: I move to approve sending a letter of support on behalf of the City of North Port in support of the Teen Court Program to the Governor of Florida.
* Pro: Demonstrates the City's commitment to youth intervention, rehabilitation, and community-based justice.
* Con: Does not guarantee funding or direct impact from the State.
Option 2: I move to decline sending a letter of support for the Teen Court Program to the Governor of Florida at this time.
* Pro: Allows the Commission additional time to review program details, outcomes, and funding implications.
* Con: Misses an opportunity to advocate for a program that supports at-risk youth and restorative justice.
Background Information
Vice Mayor Langdon currently serves on the Teen Court Board. In this role, Vice Mayor Langdon has requested that the City Commission consider sending a letter of support for the Teen Court Program to the Governor of Florida. The requested letter would express the City's support for the Teen Court Program and its role in providing a constructive, community-based alternative for youth involved in the juvenile justice system.
The Teen Court Program focuses on accountability, education, and rehabilitation by allowing eligible youth to have their cases heard by a jury of their peers. The program aims to reduce recidivism, promote positive decision-making, and encourage civic responsibility among participating youth.
