Background Information

On June 6, 2022, during their regular meeting, the Environmental Advisory Board (EAB) discussed and made a motion to approve the attached advisement to the Honorable Mayor and Members of the North Port Commission, requesting that a tree canopy assessment be conducted.

North Port recognizes the importance of urban tree canopy assessments, as such studies help the City better understand the extent and health of its urban forests. These forests provide numerous benefits, including reducing energy costs, improving air quality, managing stormwater, and enhancing public health. By assessing the tree canopy, the Natural Resources Division can make informed decisions to protect and expand green spaces, contributing to a more sustainable and livable environment.

The Natural Resources Division has completed the 2024 North Port Tree Canopy Assessment internally using the open-source and scientifically robust i-Tree methodology. This will allow City staff to effectively track changes in canopy coverage. This study has generated significant data that could serve as an important resource for future projects, such as potential land preservation acquisitions, tree monitoring, and tree planting programs.
