Recommended Action
Approve the application for the 2022 Bulletproof Vest Grant in the amount of $15,720.00, and authorize the City Manager or the Mayor, as applicable under the City Charter, to execute all funding documents after legal review, should the grant be awarded to the City.
Background Information
The United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) offers a grant annually for replacement body armor for Police Officers. Funding decisions and notifications are made by email no later than September 30, 2022. The program requires a 50% match of the cost of the body armor.
Body armor expires five (5) years after the manufacture date. The USDOJ has requested a count of vests expected to be replaced during the next two years. This count includes replacement vests that have met the five (5) years, vests required due to employee turnover, and anticipated new positions. The request is for 40 vests with a total estimated cost of $31,440.00. If the grant is awarded fully, the USDOJ award would be $15,720.00.
Although there is no guarantee, the North Port Police Department has received this grant for over fifteen (15) years and is usually awarded the total amount requested. The USDOJ can make an award in a lower amount.
Strategic Plan
Maintain the adopted level of health and public safety services.
Financial Impact
If awarded, the grant amount will be $15,720.00 over a two (2) year period and has partially been placed in the 2022/2023 budget as revenue to the General Fund with a corresponding expenditure. The remainder of the revenue would go into the 2023/2024 budget.
