TITLE: Playful City USA designation and Play Day in North Port, Florida Proclamation to be accepted by a member of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

Recommended Action

City Commission recognizes the City's Playful City USA designation for 2014 and proclaim November 15, 2014 as "Play Day in North Port, Florida"

Background Information

For the fifth consecutive year, North Port has been selected as a Playful City USA by KaBOOM! a national non-profit advocating for play since 1996. Playful City USA communities are recognized for making a commitment to play and physical activity by developing plans to increase the quantity and quality of play in their community. North Port was among 212 communities from 43 states to receive the designation this year. North Port will be recognized as one of the 212 communities at the Playful City USA Summit in Chicago, IL in late October.

There are five commitments required to maintain status as a Playful City USA community:
1. Ensure the agenda on play is integrated into daily operations by maintaining a Play Committee, commission or task force.
2. Design an annual action plan for play - build on past successes and take advantage of national practices furthering the City's commitment to engage the community in play.
3. Maintain the City's inventory of play spaces in KaBOOM's national database.
4. Outline financial and civic investment - highlight the resources invested for play by providing current budgets for capital improvements in Parks and Recreation.
5. Proclaim and conduct an annual Play Day.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will be working with staff to develop special activities to recognize November 15th as North Port Play Day. A member of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will be accepting the proclamation.
