TITLE:                                          2020 Water Funding Resolution

Recommended Action

Discussion and possible action regarding the approval of a resolution supporting the Florida League of Cities water resources legislative priority.

Background Information

Water resources are of vital importance to not only to North Port’s environment, but to the economic development of our City, and the health, well-being and way of life for its residents.  All across the State, water infrastructure assets and water resources drive economic vitality and growth of the state.  Aging infrastructure needs, increased compliance mandates, growing costs for water security and increased needs for source water protection and re-use of treated effluent have made the need for water infrastructure funding more important than ever.

The Florida League of Cities has made water resource funding a legislative priority for 2020 and had drafted a resolution urging legislation in support of initiatives which require the evaluation of Florida’s water infrastructure; identification of funds necessary to protect and enhance water resources, address wastewater management and provide water quality protection and development; and the identification evaluation of State funding alternatives and other financing mechanisms or models used elsewhere to address water infrastructure needs.

Commissioner Luke has requested that the Draft Resolution Supporting Passage of Legislation to Determine the State of Florida Water Infrastructure Funding Needs and Potential Sources of Revenue to Address Same prepared by the FLC be brought to the Commission for consideration.
