TO: Honorable Mayor & Members of the North Port Commission
FROM: Peter D. Lear, CPA, CGMA, City Manager
TITLE: Proclamation for Fire Prevention Week, October 7 to 13, 2018
Recommended Action
Approval and reading of proclamation designating the week of October 7 to 13, 2018 as Fire Prevention Week.
Background Information
Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, October 8 - 9, 1871. The two-day blaze killed more than 250 people and left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres. The tragedy inspired reform across America, spurring new fire safety codes and public awareness campaigns. Each October, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) serves as the official sponsor of a nationwide prevention campaign to highlight the importance of fire safety education.
The City of North Port urges all members of our community to participate in fire prevention activities - look and identify places in the home where fires can start, listen for your smoke alarm and respond immediately and learn two ways out of every room and practice home fire escape plans.
The City’s Fire Marshal, Peter Marietti will be accepting this proclamation along with life safety fire inspectors and members of the fire prevention team.
