TO: Honorable Mayor & Members of the North Port Commission
FROM: Peter D. Lear, CPA, CGMA, City Manager
TITLE: Proclamation of October, 2017, as Cyber Security Month.
Recommended Action
Proclaim October, 2017, as Cyber Security Month. Jeff Kasson, IT Division Manager, and Rejean Drapeau, Police IT Administrator, will be accepting the proclamation on behalf of the City of North Port.
Background Information
National Cyber Security Awareness Month is an annual effort to increase awareness and prevention of online security issues. The world is gaining awareness of the impact that Cybercrimes can have on business and private lives. Cybercrimes involve such things as the theft of personally identifiable information, identity theft, loss of productivity, malicious attacks on digital assets, and credit and debit card fraud. While Information Technology organizations seek to implement best practices to prevent Cybercrimes, it is important for all individuals to be aware and vigilant in the protection of assets within their digital life. To that end, both Police and the City of North Port’s Information Technology Divisions will have Cyber Security information on their web page, informational brochures available in City Hall and posters in a variety of City locations. There will be informational presentations for both City staff and the public in City chambers during the month of October.
