TITLE: Proclamation for Play Day in North Port, Florida
Recommended Action
City Commission proclaim September 22, 2017 as Play Day in the City of North Port, Florida. Jonathan Wheatley and Dorothy St. Pierre will be accepting the Proclamation.
Background Information
Playful City USA is a national recognition program honoring cities and towns that are making their cities more playable and taking action to ensure that children in their communities get the balanced and active play they need to thrive. To be honored as a Playful City USA designation, communities must demonstrate a commitment to play by promoting family-friendly, kid-friendly environments that promote play everywhere; building and maintaining parks and playgrounds; engaging citizens in parks and recreation initiatives; leveraging community partnerships; and financially funding new and existing parks and play spaces.
In 2017, the City of North Port was one of 258 communities nationwide and one of 36 communities in the State of Florida to receive the designation. This also marks the eighth consecutive year that North Port has been recognized as a “Playful City USA.” The City’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board along with staff from the Parks and Recreation Division are tasked with developing recommendations to meet Playful City initiatives.
