Background Information
This program is designed to recognize a resident who has gone above and beyond when it comes to environmental stewardship and protecting the natural environment. The North Port City Commission has deemed protection of the City’s natural and environmental resources as one of the key pillars of its strategic plan. The City of North Port has been designated a Certified Green Local Government by the Florida Green Building Coalition. The City continually makes efforts to be more energy-efficient and achieve long-term cost savings, all while maintaining the highest standards of environmental stewardship and preservation. The Greenest Citizen award program is designed to recognize North Port residents who also go above and beyond to protect our natural resources.
The benchmarks for nominations include:
• Recycling
• Planting Florida friendly landscaping
• Educating the public through local forums on environmental protection
• Outstanding environmental stewardship
Beginning on February 15, 2017 the City of North Port encouraged residents through an online survey to nominate an individual who should be honored as the City of North Port’s Greenest Citizen. This is the seventh consecutive year the City has hosted the Greenest Citizen Award. This year, the City of North Port received two nominations from the community. Both of those nominations were for: Cheri Lee
Cheri Lee was awarded the winner for the third consecutive year in a row
