TITLE: Approval to apply for and accept the Walmart Foundation Grant, in an amount up to $5,000 to provide school supplies for the Back to School Resource Fair and gifts for Home for the Holidays program.
Recommended Action
Approve the Social Services Division of the General Services Department to submit an online grant application; and accept any successful grant award; from the Walmart Foundation Community Grant Program. This grant helps offset the cost of backpacks and school supplies in conjunction with the Back to School Resource Fair, and also utilized to offset the cost of purchasing gifts for children ages birth to 14 through the Home for the Holidays program.
Background Information
For the past fourteen (14) years the Social Services Division has coordinated the Back to School Resource Fair which provides an opportunity for families to connect with educational resources and to gather information from community agencies. In addition, this event helps parents alleviate the costs associated with purchasing school supplies. Our Home for the Holidays program is focused on providing gifts to children ages birth to 14; with a program requirement that all applicants are low to moderate income and are currently receiving some type of public assistance. Both programs are specifically for North Port residents.
The Social Services Division, has applied for and received annual grants from the Walmart Foundation since 2006. Attached for reference are the 2017 grant application and award notification.

Financial Impact
The Social Services Division budgeted in the FY17/18 adopted operating budget, $9,500 for the Back to School Resource Fair and $4,000 for the Home for the Holidays in account 001-0730-564-49-20. This grant award will be utilized to offset these operating expenditures....
