TITLE: Discussion, and possible action regarding the awarding of funds from the Special Event Assistance Program to the People for Trees, Inc. in the amount of $200.00 to cover the cost of renting the North Port Community Education Center (Peterson Room).


Recommended Action

Approve the People for Trees, Inc. request for funding assistance through the Special Event Assistance Program in the amount of $200.00 to cover the cost of renting the North Port Community Education Center (Peterson Room).

Background Information

The Special Event Assistance Program was adopted by City Commission on November 25, 2013. The purpose of the program is to provide funds toward the cost of City fees/resources for events held within the City of North Port that provides a benefit to residents or businesses.

Since the program implementation, many special event clinics were held to educate the public on the special event permitting process and the special event assistance program.

The City has received a request for financial assistance from People for Trees, Inc. during the first quarter application period (January 1st to March 31st) for their annual tree fair. The event is scheduled to be held on April 22, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. expected attendance is 200 people which makes the applicant available for assistance in the amount of $200.00.

As stated by the applicant, "People for Trees purpose is to promote the education and understanding of our native trees that includes informational workshops indoors and tree sales outdoors".

In addition to the above, there will be a native tree and Florida-friendly gardening workshops held in the large indoor room from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

People for Trees, Inc. is a non-profit organization promoting the importance of protecting and maintaining a healthy, native tree canopy.
