TITLE:                     Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2016 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program-Florida JAG Direct application.

Recommended Action

Approve application of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $6,672 for the purchase of an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV).

Background Information

The North Port Police Department seeks to acquire $6,672 through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program FY 2016 Solicitation, which has been allocated through the Department of Justice.

If approved, $6,672 of grant funding will be used to purchase one All-Terrain Vehicle.  The estimated cost for this project purchase is $6,663.10.

The City of North Police Department expects to broaden its law enforcement efforts within the undeveloped areas and trails of North Port to obtain voluntary compliance with the laws, and to continue to assist in any needed search and rescue operations during a report of a missing person.  The efforts which will be utilized include, but are not limited to increased ATV patrols, educating the public through social media, and utilization of all available law enforcement equipment.  With the approval of this grant, the North Port Police Department will be capable of added patrols within the affected areas with goals of reducing incidents of crime and/or injury and possible missing persons.  Additionally, with the approval of this grant, there will be increased safety to officers, as well as to the public that are lawfully within the areas affected by the unlawful activity.  The scope of work that is projected includes the added use of ATV patrols to effectively protect the life and property within the corporate boundaries of the City of North Port.  A Service Level Adjustment, attachment 2, was included in the current year’s budget to increase the number of ATVs from 2 to 4 in the department.  The plan was to replace the two existing ATVs next fiscal year.  If this grant is approved and awarded, a third ATV would be purchased this fiscal year, leaving only one for replacement next fiscal year.

There is no grant match and no cost to the City of North Port.
