Recommended Action

City Commission proclaim November 24, 2018 as Ukrainian Holodomor Genocide Observance Day in the City of North Port, FL.

Background Information

Saturday, November 24 marks the 85th anniversary of Ukrainian Holodomor Genocide of 1932-33, a man-made famine, orchestrated by Soviet dictator Stalin, in which millions of innocent men, women, and children died of starvation.

Every year on November 24th, Ukrainians around the world, among them many Ukrainian American residents of North Port and the County of Sarasota, observe this horrible crime against humanity to honor and remember the innocent victims. At the height of the Holodomor (“murder by starvation”) in 1933, the genocide claimed the lives of 28,000 Ukrainians every day.
