TITLE: 2017 Federal Priorities
Recommended Action
Discussion and direction regarding 2017 Federal Priorities
Background Information
North Port does not currently fund a federal lobbyist to monitor federal legislation throughout the year to identify funding and other opportunities. The City is involved in several organizations that do set federal priorities and monitor the impacts on cities. Some of these include our local metropolitan planning organizations and our local, state and federal league of cities. The commissioners also sit on a variety of committees that monitor and report on federal legislation. In addition, staff members sit on committees and are members of professional organizations that report on potential impact of federal legislation.
Congress has banned specific earmarked projects form all appropriations legislation in an effort to increase transparency and shift spending decisions to the federal agencies via competitive grant programs. This is likely to continue in 2017.
In the past the City Commission has adopted legislative priorities in preparation for the upcoming federal legislative session sometime around February of each year.
The North Port City Commission’s adopted 2016 Federal Legislative priorities are attached.
