TITLE: Memorandum of Understanding between Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida (AAASWFL) and the City of North Port to complete and submit applications for the Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP)


Recommended Action

City Commission approves the Memorandum of Understanding between Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida (AAASWFL) and the City of North Port, so that the General Services Department, Social Services Division, will be able to continue assisting our elderly population in completing and submitting applications to the Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP).

Background Information

The Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP) assists low-income households, age 60 and older, when the households are experiencing a home energy emergency. Applicant households must meet financial eligibility guidelines, and have an imminent energy crisis. A crisis may be an impending cut-off of utility services or an unusually hot or cold seasonal energy usage, resulting in a past due account.

Payments are for home heating or cooling and other emergency energy-related costs during the heating (October-March) and cooling (April-September) seasons. Eligible households may be provided one $600 benefit per season. After the EHEAP application is completed and eligibility is determined, assistance is provided until available funds are depleted.

Social Services will continue to be able to screen clients for this additional funding source so elderly individuals who do not have transportation or do not wish to drive to Venice will be able to receive services at the Family Service Center.
