Background Information
The National Weather Service, The Florida Division of Emergency Management, and local governments are working together to increase awareness about the importance of hurricane preparedness. This proclamation designates May 5 - 11, 2019 as Hurricane Preparedness Week, which is occurring throughout the nation's coastal states.
The 2018 hurricane season included Hurricane Michael which was the third-most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in the United States in terms of pressure behind Camille in 1969 and Andrew in 1992. This storm devastated the Florida Panhandle when it made landfall near Mexico Beach, FL. Members of North Port Fire Rescue deployed to Mexico Beach to help in the efforts of search and rescue and brining needed manpower to help with the clean-up.
It is an ongoing concern that people should maintain emergency supply kits to use at home or during an evacuation with enough non-perishable food and water to sustain family members and pets for three to seven days. Knowledge of evacuation routes, locations of official shelters, complying with local authorities and having a working weather alert radio is essential. If you require special needs assistance, we encourage residents to pre-register through Sarasota County Emergency Management in advance.
During the months of April to June informal talks are being conducted around town at homeowner associations, business groups and civic organizations to reinforce the message and remind everyone of hurricane hazards along with tips on being prepared. Disaster Planning Guides will be available to the public in late May around the City.
