TITLE: Presentation by Sheriff Tom Knight on the Homeless Outreach Team.
Recommended Action
Presentation and discussion by Sheriff Tom Knight on the Homeless Outreach Team.
Background Information
Sheriff Tom Knight will give a presentation on the Homeless Outreach Team.
On January 30, 2018 the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners approved funding for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Team (HOT). The team will include a director and two (2) case managers (all non-sworn), to perform outreach services for unincorporated Sarasota County. This is a joint program in partnership with the Salvation Army funded by Sarasota County Government, that incentivizes people to work with their team to better themselves.
Sheriff Knight is requesting the City of North Port to review the program and consider adding a civilian who will work with their members to represent our municipality. This collaboration provides the opportunity to assist with homeless issues across all of south Sarasota County, as he has offered this to Venice as well. The Sheriff is willing to provide training with a focus on best practices while ensuring the program is within the boundaries of the law.
Strategic Plan
Financially Responsible City Providing Quality Municipal Services.
Financial Impact
If this is implemented in the City of North Port, it would require creating a new civilian position with a cost of approximately $52,000 plus benefits.
