Background Information

This program is designed to recognize a resident who has gone above and beyond when it comes to environmental stewardship and protecting the natural environment. The North Port City Commission has deemed protection of the City’s natural environmental resources as one of the key pillars of its strategic plan. The City of North Port has been designated a Certified Green Local Government by the Florida Green Building Coalition. The City continually makes efforts to be more energy-efficient and achieve long-term cost savings, all while maintaining the highest standards of environmental stewardship and preservation. The Greenest Citizen Award program is designed to recognize North Port residents who also go above and beyond to protect our natural resources.

The Benchmarks for nominations include:

                     Recycling

                     Planting Florida friendly landscaping

Educating the public through local forums on environmental protection

                     Outstanding environmental stewardship

Beginning March 11, 2019, the City of North Port encouraged residents through an online survey to nominate an individual who should be honored as the City of North Port’s Greenest Citizen. This year, the City of North Port will announce the winner on Arbor Day, April 26, 2019 and the winner will be recognized at the May 2, 2019 Special Commission Meeting.
