TITLE: Approval to apply for and accept the Walmart Foundation Grant, in an amount up to $5,000 to provide school supplies for the Back to School Resource Fair and gifts for Home for the Holidays program.

Recommended Action

Approve the Social Services Division to submit an online grant application; and accept any successful grant award; from the Walmart Foundation Community Grant Program. This grant helps offset the cost of backpacks and school supplies in conjunction with the Back to School Resource Fair and will also be utilized to offset the cost of purchasing gifts for the Home for the Holidays program.

Background Information

For the past fifteen (15) years the Social Services Division has coordinated the Back to School Resource Fair which provides an opportunity for families to connect with educational resources and to gather information from community agencies. In addition, this event helps parents alleviate the costs associated with purchasing school supplies. Our Home for the Holidays program is focused on providing a holiday experience to families and individuals who are low to moderate income and are currently receiving some type of public assistance. Both programs are specifically for North Port residents.

The Social Services Division has applied for and received annual grants from the Walmart Foundation since 2006. Attached for reference is the 2018 grant application and award notification.

Strategic Plan

Enhanced Public Trust through Responsible City Government

Financial Impact

The Social Services Division budgeted in the FY18/19 adopted operating budget, $9,500 for the Back to School Resource Fair and $5,100 for the Home for the Holidays program in account 001-0730-564-49-20. This grant award will be utilized to offset these operating expenditures.
