Recommended Action
Approval of Resolution No. 2018-R-30
Background Information
The United States has 58 National Parks with three of them in Florida (Everglades, Dry Tortugas and Biscayne). The National Parks Service, a Bureau of the Department of Interior, preserves the natural and cultural resources of our country. It is critical these historic places be properly maintained for everyone’s enjoyment - not only for today but for future generations. Florida has eleven locations in the National Parks Service, generating over $613 million in economic benefit to their surrounding communities with over 10,800,000 visitors Congress is tasked with maintenance of our National Parks but there is a backlog in general repairs and to the aging infrastructure. The backlog keeps growing every year. The deferred maintenance backlog is approximately $262 million for Florida’s National Parks and approximately $11.6 billion nationwide. DeSoto National Memorial, located in Bradenton, needs $463,000 in deferred maintenance. The Everglades, our closest National Park, needs over $90 million in deferred maintenance.
