TITLE: Ordinance No. 2018-16, Second Reading, Change of Street Name, Renaming a Section of South West Villages Parkway to Playmore Road

Recommended Action

City Commission approve Ordinance No. 2018-16 for adoption.

Background Information

On February 16, 2018, the City received an application for change of street name on behalf of the West Villages Improvement District to rename a section of South West Villages Parkway beginning at a point approximately 5,335 feet south of the intersection of U.S. 41 and South West Villages Parkway and continuing westward approximately 5,394 feet to its terminus point at Islandwalk Circle.

At its initial development, South West Villages Parkway turned at its southern end to terminate into the Islandwalk subdivision. As development plans have changed, South West Villages Parkway is now intended to continue south and connect to River Road at the intersection of Winchester Boulevard. As a result, the road name would duplicate, which causes concerns for public safety. This request to rename the portion of South West Villages Parkway to Playmore Road will remediate this concern. Playmore Road within the West Villages development will eventually connect with to the existing Playmore Road on the east side of River Road in Sarasota County.

This request has been reviewed and approved by Sarasota County. Ordinance No. 2018-16 was reviewed as to form and correctness by the City Attorney's Office.

This Ordinance was heard for first reading at the October 9, 2018 City Commission meeting. At first reading, Commission directed staff to fix the code references which incorrectly identified the ULDC and should have referenced the Administrative Code. Staff was also directed to add the word maintain in the fifth whereas clause for clarity. These changes have been made.
