TITLE: Ordinance No. 2018-03, second reading, amending the Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Fire Rescue District Budget.

Recommended Action

Approve Ordinance No. 2018-03, amending the Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Fire Rescue District Budget.

Background Information

Fire Rescue is requesting an amendment to the FY 2018 budget for additional funding in the amount of $44,200 to hire and equip a full-time temporary Fire and Life Safety Inspector. The amendment utilizes fund balance to provide the needed funding.

As the West Villages continues to grow, residential and commercial development has placed an increased demand on the current Fire Prevention Division staff. This demand has reduced the ability to meet the Division's quarterly performance review goals and provide adequate life safety services to the community. To address this need, the department is requesting a temporary Fire and Life Safety Inspector. This position and associated funding is requested only through the end of the current fiscal year; however, a request for extension or conversion to full-time, permanent employee may be included in the FY 2018-2019 Fire Rescue District budget.

The position will be provided with a new vehicle funded from Fire Rescue Impact fees. A Non-District Budget amendment for the new vehicle at a cost of $47,500 is being presented at a regular commission meeting. Personnel and operating equipment costs will be funded from this amendment to the Fire Rescue District budget. The position vacancy will be advertised immediately after approval of the first reading, with hiring after the second reading.

The total budget cost is $91,700 for the temporary Fire and Life Safety Inspector.
