TITLE: Presentation of an annual report about a music suite use agreement for the North Port Performing Arts Center

Recommended Action

Receive a presentation from Joan Skowyra, president of the North Port Performing Arts Association, about the use of a music suite at the North Port Performing Arts Center by the North Port Concert Band, North Port Chorale, and North Port Symphony.

Background Information

In 1998, the City of North Port and the Sarasota County School District signed a construction agreement in which the City would provide funding:

1. To upgrade a planned high school auditorium into a professionally equipped performing arts theater (now known as the North Port Performing Arts Center);
2. To fully fund construction of a 60,000-square-foot facility that became known as the Music Suite, which is now the rehearsal venue for the North Port Concert Band, North Port Chorale, and North Port Symphony (collectively known as the North Port Performing Arts Association).

A Use Agreement for the Music Suite (effective as of February 1, 2011) currently exists between the City of North Port and the Sarasota County School District.

Each year, the North Port Performing Arts Association provides usage reports to the North Port City Commission. Joan Skowya, president of the North Port Performing Arts Association, will present a report to the City Commission on May 12, 2014.

Strategic Plan

The North Port City Commission's strategic plan outlines its Vision 2028, in which part of that states, "North Port 2028 offers a climate for economic growth and community prosperity, quality of local healthcare and quality of life opportunities."
