TITLE: Approve Construction of Additional Sidewalks for a Cost of $9,902.54 and Install 37 Additional Parking Stops for a Cost of $1,511.45, for a Total Cost of $11,413.99 at the Community Education Center Located at 4940 Pan American Boulevard.
Recommended Action
Approve construction of additional sidewalks for a cost of $9,902.54 and install 37 additional parking stops for a cost of $1,511.45, for a total cost of $11,413.99 at the Community Education Center located at 4940 Pan American Boulevard.
Background Information
The following includes the Commission's directives provided during the Commission Special Meeting held on August 17, 2020, as well as staff's responses:
1. Directive: Consensus to send memo to Commission regarding Funding sources/breakdown of the Community Education Center (Project P17CEC), from inception to present.
Response: Completed. (See Attachment 1).
2. Directive: Consensus to look at extending sidewalk on south end of parking lot as it is on the north end of the parking lot of the Community Education Center, including engineer's opinion, cost analysis, and provide possible alternatives.
Response: Pursuant to the Commission's directive, on August 19, 2020, Gerardo Traverso, P.E., P.M.P., Engineering Manager/City Engineer conducted a field visit to evaluate the missing connection between the newly constructed sidewalk and the new pavement. Subsequent to the field visit, Mr. Traverso provided the following recommendation in his Engineering Opinion (See Attachment 2):
"It is our opinion that the sidewalk on the south side of the building should not be connected to the pavement to discourage pedestrians to cross at an unsafe area. The way the sidewalk was designed and constructed is a safe condition and as explained before, the purpose of this sidewalk is to provide access for the handicapped parking spaces abutting the sid...
