TITLE: Economic Development - Sister City Program Update
Recommended Action
Based upon the city’s history with Sister City programs, staff recommends that this remain a nonprofit type program for the benefit of the community and with no formal assistance provided by the City of North Port.
Background Information
As requested by Commission, The Sister City program information was provided in December 2018 and provided a review of its roots and how it is implemented across a variety of settings. The possible recommendations varied but were encouraging. At Commissioners’ request, additional scrutiny of the program and the City’s involvement was undertaken by the Economic Development Division which unearthed that a prior Sister City relationship had been established in 2010. To understand its five-year evolution, staff prepared a North Port City Timeline to document its progress from 2010 to 2015 when it was dissolved citing its “difficulty operating as a City Advisory Board.”
