TITLE: Canine Donation in the amount of $10,000.00


Recommended Action

Approve receiving a donation in the amount of $10,000.00 for the purchase of a non-budgeted canine and miscellaneous equipment.

Background Information

The North Port Police Department is seeking to expand it's Canine (K9) Unit by adding two additional canines for the purpose of explosive detection.

With our City's rapid growth in commercial, entertainment, attraction venues and large-scale events, the need for Explosive Detection Dogs (EDD), has become a priority resource for the City of North Port. The canines will be a needed resource year-round for the North Port Police Department to conduct searches for a variety of explosive materials near exterior buildings, parking lots, office areas, vehicles, packages, and people in and around major events. They also provide a strong visible and psychological deterrent against criminal and terrorist threats. These EDD's will also be dual purpose with the capabilities of tracking individuals.

An anonymous donor has learned of the Police Department's intentions of seeking additional canines for the purpose of community safety and has generously donated $10,000.00 to the City of North Port to purchase one (1) Canine. The anonymous donor has also requested that any additional money left over from the purchase of a canine, is to be used to purchase additional equipment for the canine team.

Financial Impact

The funds being donated will be added to the Police Department budget in the General Fund for the current fiscal year.
