TITLE: A Resolution of the City of North Port, Florida, Amending City Commission Policy No. 2020-02 Related to the Issuance of Ceremonial Items, Including Keys to the City; Providing for Conflicts; Providing for Severability; and Providing an Effective Date.


Recommended Action

Option 1: To adopt Resolution No. 2026-R-54 as presented.

City Commission Options

Option 1: To adopt Resolution No. 2026-R-54 as presented.
* Pros: Provides a stricter criterion for the issuance of Keys to the City, holding the issuance to a higher honor.
* Cons: Would hinder the issuance of a Key to the City for residents who have gone above and beyond in civic engagement and betterment to the quality of life within the City.

Option 2: To adopt Resolution No. 2026-R-54 with the following changes (insert changes).

Background Information

The following provides a chronological order of events pertinent to Ceremonial Item Policy:

* October 27, 2020: During the City Commission Regular Meeting, the Commission approved Ceremonial Item Policy No. 2020-02 via Resolution No.2020-R-37 establishing definition of and criteria for the issuance of a Key to the City.

* April 7, 2026: During the City Commission Regular Meeting a motion was made by Commissioner Stokes, seconded by Commissioner Duval, to direct the City Clerk to create an agenda item for discussion and possible action to review the Ceremonial Item Policy.

* June 23, 2026: During the City Commission Regular Meeting a motion was made by Commissioner Stokes, seconded by Commissioner Duval, to direct the City Clerk to draft a Resolution amending Policy No. 2020-02 as presented.
