Recommended Action

Approve the application to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Community Development Block Grant Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure Program for Myakkahatchee Creek Water Treatability Improvements in the amount of $4,500,000, and authorize the City Manager or the Mayor, as applicable under the City Charter, to execute all funding documents after legal review, should the grant be awarded to the City.

Background Information

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity opened the Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure Program grant which is designed to provide funding opportunities for local governments to develop large-scale mitigation activities that allow Florida communities to better withstand future disasters. The program was formed as a result of the 2017 hurricanes and is only available to communities impacted by those storms. The grant opportunity is also commonly known as the Community Development Block Grant Mitigation program (CDBG-MIT).

Staff applied to the funding opportunity to help pay for Myakkahatchee Creek water treatability improvements. The project is to add equipment and chemical treatment components ahead of the reverse osmosis membrane plant to mitigate higher TDS conditions, typically common in the dry season.
