Recommended Action
Approve Resolution No. 2019-R-19.
Background Information
The North Port Police Department (NPPD) would like to partner with the Kiwanis Club of North Port, Inc (Kiwanis), forming a chapter of Do the Right Thing (DTRT). This is a community program recognizing exemplary behavior, acts of humanity, and public service by City residents under the age of eighteen (18) (a "Good Samaritan"). Kiwanis will accept nominations from the community and recognize one Good Samaritan per month.
NPPD will purchase necessary chapter start-up supplies and pay the initial fee to begin a chapter with DTRT. Funding will come from forfeiture funds NPPD receives for property seized. Florida Statutes Section 932.7055 allows the use of forfeiture funds for certain purposes, including but not limited to crime prevention, safe neighborhood, drug abuse education and prevention programs, or other certain law enforcement purposes, provided that the City Commission grants authorization for the expenditure.
The City Attorney has reviewed and approved the Resolution.
Strategic Plan
Enhance services and expand availability of resources provided to residents.
Financial Impact
Funds will come from the Forfeiture Account in the amount of $1,000, $500 for the fee to begin a chapter of Do the Right Thing and $500 for the initial purchase of materials.
