Recommended Action

Approve Contract No. 2020-29 for the Community Education Center Parking Lot Improvements to O-A-K/Florida, Inc. dba Owen Ames Kimball Company in the amount of $502,780.40, with a construction contingency amount of $50,278.04, for a total contract not to exceed amount of $553,058.44.

Background Information

At the June 12, 2018 Regular Commission Meeting, Commission accepted Design Option 3 for the parking lot improvements at the Community Education Center. Upon approval of this conceptual design, DMK Associates, Inc. developed the construction plans, coordinated the required environmental reports, secured necessary SWFWMD permits and completed the Site Development Review process.

For reference, the parking lot improvements include replacing the existing parking loop with a patron drop-off area, adding a connection to the Family Services Center parking lot near the Florida Center; increasing the number of parking spaces from 71 to 119; relocating or possibly replacing the existing gazebo; replacing the shuffleboard court; and improving the overall traffic flow of the site. As previously discussed, the design process was mindful of the existing tree canopy.

On November 8, 2019 Request for Bid No. 2020-29 was advertised in the Sarasota Herald Tribune and went live on DemandStar. Bids were due on December 17, 2019 with a total of five bids received. On January 15, 2020, after a due diligence review and reference verification, the City issued a notice of intent to award RFB No. 2020-29 to O-A-K/Florida Inc. dba Owen Ames Kimball Company.
