TITLE: Approve the State of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Subgrant for Highway Traffic Safety Funds in the Amount of $20,000, and Authorize the City Manager or the Mayor, as Applicable Under the City Charter, to Execute all Funding Documents After Legal Review.

Recommended Action

Approve the State of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Subgrant for Highway Traffic Safety Funds in the amount of $20,000, and authorize the City Manager or the Mayor, as applicable under the City Charter, to execute all funding documents after legal review.

Background Information

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) State Safety Office awards subgrant opportunities to traffic safety partners that undertake priority programs and activities to improve traffic safety and reduce crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities. Grants may be awarded to address traffic safety deficiencies, for expansion of an ongoing activity or for development of a new program.

If awarded, this funding would be used to implement a Teen Driver Challenge program hosted by North Port Police Department for North Port residents ages 16-19 who meet specified criteria. The program would offer both classroom instruction and hands-on experiences designed to help young drivers learn vehicle safety and appropriate emergency traffic maneuvers in a safe, closed-course environment controlled by FDLE certified driving instructors.

Matching funds are not required. This is a reimbursable grant, meaning the City will spend first and then request reimbursement from the granting agency. The grant application deadline was Friday, February 28, 2025. Notification of award is expected in Fall 2025.

If awarded, the Interim City Attorney will review the Contract to ensure it is legally correct as to form.
