Recommended Action

Approve the application to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $808,655.04 for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and authorize the City Manager or the Mayor, as applicable under the City Charter, to execute all funding documents after legal review, should the grant be awarded to the City.

Background Information

The AFG program helps Firefighters obtain critically needed resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

The Fire Rescue Department is requesting funding for an agency wide replacement of our aging Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for structural firefighting. The Fire Rescue Department's SCBA equipment will be ten years old at the time of the potential replacement. This equipment is nearing "end of life" for maintenance/warranty support, which is scheduled to run out during the 2025 calendar year.

The Fire Rescue Department has requested $808,655.04 to cover the purchase of SCBA, including harness, face piece and two cylinders; spare cylinders; and spare face pieces. If awarded, the City expects to receive $808,655.04. Matching funds in the amount of $80,865.50 are required and will be budgeted in fiscal year 2025. Currently, cleaning, maintenance and repairs for structural PPE is $26,000 per year. Future costs could increase to up $52,000 annually. This cost is part of Fire Rescue District's annual budget.
