FROM: A. Jerome Fletcher II, ICMA-CM, MPA, City Manager
TITLE: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding a Resolution Opposing the Mosaic Mining Operations in De Soto County due to Potential Impacts to the City of North Port's Potable Water Supply and the Surrounding Area.
Recommended Action
Direct the City Manager to prepare a Resolution opposing the Mosaic mining operations in De Soto County due to potential impacts to the City of North Port's potable water supply and the surrounding area.
Background Information
On June 7, 2018, the North Port City Commission received a report and presentation from Stantec on the effects that Mosaic’s mining operations would have on the City of North Port’s potable water supply and the surrounding area if their mining application were approved by DeSoto County. The City has sent several letters supporting DeSoto County’s denial for a mining permit.
On January 24, 2023, the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners adopted a Resolution opposing Mosaic’s mining efforts in DeSoto County and requested all members of the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority to adopt similar Resolutions.
Commissioner McDowell has requested a discussion regarding the City of North Port adopting a similar Resolution.
