TITLE: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding a Draft Letter to DeSoto County Commissioners Concerning Impacts of Proposed Expansion of Mosaic Mining Operations.
Recommended Action
Discussion and possible action.
Background Information
On July 24, 2018, and again on June 8, 2021, the City of North Port sent letters to DeSoto County Commission outlining the City’s concerns regarding Mosaic’s proposed DeSoto West and East Phosphate mines and how the mining may affect the City’s drinking water supply. Per Commission direction, the letters were sent to DeSoto County, Manasota County, and several State and Federal agencies, as well as Mosaic’s representative.
In 2018, DeSoto County denied Mosaic’s proposed rezoning needed for the phosphate mining operation. Mosaic sent a memorandum dated June 24, 2022, indicating that Mosaic is planning to apply to DeSoto County again in 2025 for the same rezoning.
Commissioner Luke has requested a discussion regarding sending an updated letter to the same parties as the prior two, voicing the City’s concerns over the impacts of this potential expansion of mining operations on the City’s water supply.
