Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Regulating Sales of Tobacco and Vaping Products.

Background Information

At its September 24, 2019 meeting, the City Commission unanimously voted to have the City Attorney and Police Department work with Students Working Against Tobacco to bring back an ordinance for first reading similar to Fort Lauderdale’s ordinance, limiting sales for all tobacco products to persons age 21 or above, except active military, and to include extreme fines for sellers. Based on this direction, City staff is actively working on a draft ordinance.

At the October 22, 2019 City Commission meeting, Sarasota County Commission Chair Charles D. Hines provided an update to the City Commission. Chair Hines indicated that the County may be considering a countywide ordinance and encouraged cities to work with the County to establish one countywide standard of regulation.
