Recommended Action

Approve the Combined Mutual Aid Agreement and Voluntary Assistance Agreement for Law Enforcement Services During Special Events.

Background Information

This Combined Mutual Aid Agreement and Voluntary Assistance Agreement for Law Enforcement Services During Special Events is entered into between the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority, on behalf of its Police Department, the Vice President of New College, on behalf of the New College Police Department, and the City of Sarasota, City of North Port, and the Town of Longboat Key.

The participating law enforcement agencies are located in relation to each other where it is to the advantage of each to receive and extend mutual aid in the form of law enforcement services and resources during special events in the respective and neighboring municipalities and jurisdictions to include: municipality permitted special events, municipality sponsored special events, and any other special event subsequently defined by the participating agency requesting contracted off-duty law enforcement staffing by law enforcement personnel, so as to protect the public peace and safety, and preserve the lives and property of the people.

Law enforcement agencies have the authority under Florida Statute, Chapter 23, Section 1225, to enter into mutual aid agreements. Such agreements permit voluntary cooperation and assistance of a routine law enforcement nature across jurisdictional lines.

This agreement shall take effect upon execution and approval by appropriate authority of each participant. The agreement has a term of four years from the date set forth above, unless terminated early in writing.

This Agreement has been reviewed by the City Attorney as to legal form.
