Background Information
The City of North Port is proud to announce the successful renewal of its StormReady certification through 2029, reaffirming our commitment to enhancing public safety and community resilience in the face of severe weather. This recognition by the National Weather Service (NWS) underscores North Port’s ongoing efforts to improve emergency preparedness and communication capabilities.
As a StormReady community, North Port has demonstrated that it meets rigorous criteria for readiness, including:
Ø Maintaining a 24-hour warning point and an active Emergency Operations Center (EOC);
Ø Using multiple reliable methods to receive and disseminate severe weather warnings;
Ø Developing and maintaining procedures for monitoring local weather conditions;
Ø Conducting public education to promote preparedness throughout the community; and
Ø Performing regular drills and exercises to test and strengthen emergency response.
The City of North Port thanks the National Weather Service - Ruskin office for their partnership and valuable assistance throughout this renewal process. Their guidance and collaboration have been instrumental in helping our community maintain StormReady status and improve our overall emergency preparedness efforts.
StormReady is more than a designation. It reflects the City’s proactive approach to protecting life and property through sound planning, training, and community outreach.
