Approve a renewal of the Combined Mutual Aid Agreement and Voluntary Assistance Agreement for Law Enforcement Services During Special Events.
Background Information
On April 1st, 2016, the City of North Port entered into a Combined Mutual Aid Agreement and Voluntary Assistance Agreement for Law Enforcement Services During Special Events with the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority, New College, City of Sarasota, and Town of Longboat Key on behalf of their respective police departments. This renewal Agreement has been amended to now include the Sarasota County School Board and City of Venice Police Departments.
This agreement allows the participating agencies to receive and extend mutual aid efficiently from each other when law enforcement services and/or resources are needed for their special events to protect the public peace and safety, and preserve the lives and property of the people. As this expands the available resources for the participating agencies, North Port Police Department is seeking approval to enter into the agreement for another four-year term. With the upcoming Braves Spring Training Season and growth of City signature events, the additional resources from participating agencies will be highly beneficial in covering staffing needs.
Law enforcement agencies have the authority under Florida Statute, Chapter 23, Section 1225, to enter into mutual aid agreements. Such agreements permit voluntary cooperation and assistance of a routine law enforcement nature across jurisdictional lines.
This Agreement has been reviewed by the City Attorney as to legal form.
