Discussion and possible action to supplement the costs for Project Graduation to use the Aquatic Center
Background Information
Project Graduation is an annual event for North Port High School Seniors. The event is beneficial to the students, their families and ultimately the community by providing seniors a safe place to celebrate. This year the event is planned for May 22, 2023. The event is run solely by volunteers. The expenses and prizes are offset through donations. In previous years, the City Commission has authorized of a donation of a surplus vehicle, as the grand prize. As of February 21, Fleet Division has been unable to identify a vehicle for donation.
In the past the event was held at various locations outside the city and at the North Port Boys and Girls Club. Once the North Port Aquatic Center opened, the event found a new location which offered a wider variety of activities. Since this event is closed to the public, it does not qualify for the City’s Special Event Assistance Program. The cost to rent the facility is $2,550 which $1,700 has been raised, to date.
Commissioner McDowell requested a discussion to determine if the Commission’s Contingency fund could be a funding source to assist with the rental shortfall.
