Background Information
The Department of Public Works has evaluated the potential benefits and/or concerns with painting or decorating traffic signal control cabinets. The Department of Public Works operates and maintains twelve (12) traffic signal control cabinets at various intersections throughout the City of North Port. Additionally, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) operates an additional twelve (12) traffic signal control cabinets within the City. However, those traffic control cabinets would not be eligible for decoration within this program being considered.
A traffic signal control cabinet decorating program may increase a sense of community; placemaking and be aesthetically pleasing to some residents and visitors. However, the Department of Public Works has identified some considerations for a potential program:
> Traffic signal control cabinets are specifically designed to protect computer equipment, controllers, sensors, and other electrical components from extreme temperatures. Dark colors or thick coatings may increase the internal temperature of the cabinet potentially reducing the life and or damaging the sensitive equipment.
> Decorated traffic control signal cabinets may distract drivers as they approach signalized intersections.
> Currently, the exterior of the traffic signal control cabinets is maintenance free. This program could result in additional maintenance of the traffic signal control cabinets:
* Cabinets are stainless steel and would require priming or special preparation prior to being painted or decorated.
* Artwork would require maintenance in response to fading, damage and/or graffiti at a higher level than the current stainless-steel material....
