TO: Honorable Mayor & Members of the North Port Commission
FROM: Jason Yarborough, ICMA-CM, Interim City Manager
TITLE: Approve the Application to The Harry Shapiro Charitable Foundation Grant in an Amount of up to $20,000 for Firearms and K9 Equipment.
Recommended Action
Approve the application to the Harry Shapiro Charitable Foundation Grant funding in an amount of up to $20,000, for the purchase of non-budgeted firearms and K9 equipment and authorize the City Manager to sign the application and accept funding.
Background Information
The Harry Shapiro Charitable Foundation would like to donate up to $20,000 to the North Port Police Department to be utilized for firearms and K9 equipment.
Members of the Harry Shapiro Charitable Foundation asked staff what the Police Department needed for equipment that was not in their FY 2020 budget.
With the grant funding from the Harry Shapiro Charitable Foundation, North Port Police Department intends to purchase 130 Glock 17 Gen 5, 9-millimeter firearms, a vehicle kennel cage, heat alarm, and door popper.
Due to budgetary constraints, this equipment was not requested in the FY2020-2021 budget request. These grant funds will allow the North Port Police Department to reduce recurring costs of ammunition purchases by going from our current 40 caliber duty issued firearm to a 9-millimeter duty issued firearm. This cost savings will be approximately $3,500.00 to $4,000.00 per year. The K9 equipment purchase will be to upfit a current department issued vehicle with a kennel cage, heat alarm system and door popper for a future explosive detection dog (EDD).
Strategic Plan
Create and sustain a safe and healthy environment for residents and visitors of North Port.
Financial Impact
If awarded, a budget amendment will be required to purchase all equipment and the $20,000 in grant funds received will be credited to account number 001-0000-366-52-00. The expenditure accounts will be 001-2100-521-52-50 and 001-21...
