TO: Honorable Mayor & Members of the North Port Commission
FROM: A. Jerome Fletcher II, City Manager
TITLE: Public Hearing for Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Draft Redistricting Maps.
Recommended Action
Public hearing for discussion and possible action regarding draft redistricting maps.
Background Information
Per City Charter, the City Commission shall approve a redistricting plan by ordinance, if a substantial change is proven, no later than 10 months (300 days) following each decennial census published results. The 2020 Census data showed the current Commission Districts to be outside of the deviation in population base on average population among the districts.
The City hired the consulting firm ARCBridge Consulting & Training Inc. to draft redistricting maps. A redistricting website has been made available to the public for over one (1) month for inspection and comment on the draft maps.
The requirements for redistricting have been met. The draft maps districts are compact, contiguous territories; are based on the principle of equal, effective representation as required by the United States Constitution; and are as equal in population as possible, with no more than a 5% deviation in population based on average population among the districts.
Adoption of a redistricting plan is anticipated for a first reading in May 2022. Any adopted redistricting plan will take effect for any election held at least one (1) year following the plan's final approval.
