Recommended Action

Approve Interlocal Agreement for Emergency Interconnects and Potable Water Service with Sarasota County.

Background Information

On November 8, 2022, the City Commission directed staff to request a change to Section 5 d. of the proposed Interlocal Agreement for Emergency Interconnects and Potable Water Service with Sarasota County. County staff suggested using City rates for the agreement so that both entities would pay the same amount for any emergency water purchased. City and County staff revised the language and are bringing the revised document to the prospective boards for their review and action.

Previous Background:

On May 14, 2007, the City entered into an Emergency Interconnect and Potable Water Service Agreement with Sarasota County. This agreement allowed for the transfer of potable water between the City and County in order to maintain water quality, allowing conservation of this finite resource and provided for an emergency interconnect as well. Sarasota County Utilities staff have requested to move the interconnect from the existing location to a point much further north, closer to the North Port city line and discontinue the transfer of non-emergency potable water, requiring a new Interlocal Emergency Interconnect and Potable Water Service with Sarasota County.

In 2022, Sarasota County was successful in obtaining a $1M Federal Appropriation for construction of this project, therefore, all construction costs will be borne by Sarasota County and reimbursed by the Appropriation.
