TITLE: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Roseate Spoonbill Sculpture
Recommended Action
Discussion and possible action.
Background Information
On April 23, 2019, the Commission gave approval to hire Donald Gialannella to create a Rosette Spoonbill sculpture on the northwest corner of Price and Sumter. This Spoonbill was chosen due to its size and no maintenance was required. Art Funds monies, not to exceed $10,000, was used to pay for this sculpture. On September 22, 2020, Commission was tasked with approving the generous donation by the Allamanda Garden Club to plant native grasses around the Spoonbill. However, concerns were raised about the Spoonbill already showing signs of rust, less than a year after the sculpture was installed. Commission directed the City Manager to reach out to the artist about making repairs. Based on information received from the City Manager, the $900 repairs will be made with the costs being split 50/50 between the artist and the City. However, staff also recommends moving the spoonbill out of the elements or ongoing maintenance to the Spoonbill twice a year, to prevent further deterioration.
Commissioner McDowell has requested that this item be brought for discussion and possible action by the Commission.
