TITLE: Approve the Donation of a Canine from the North Port Police Officers Association Provided Through the Generous Donation of $12,000 from North Port Citizens Nancy Hoffman and Linda Cook.
Recommended Action
Approve the donation of a canine from the North Port Police Officers Association provided through the generous donation of $12,000 from North Port citizens Nancy Hoffman and Linda Cook.
Background Information
In order to continue providing effective canine coverage for the City of North Port, the Police Department is requesting approval to accept the donation of a canine that will be purchased by the North Port Police Officers Association. The donated canine will ultimately replace police K-9 Dutch who will retire in October 2023.
The purchase of a canine has been made possible with the generous donation of $12,000 to the North Port Police Officers Association by North Port citizens Nancy Hoffman and Linda Cook. The canine will be selected by the North Port Police Department and paid for directly by the Association.
The donated canine will respond to calls involving missing elderly/children and attempt to locate them, track criminals that flee the scene of a crime, recover evidence, and build relationships with our community through community policing and public relation events. The handler for this canine is already in place, along with an existing vehicle that will be used for the position.
Strategic Plan
Safe Community: Create and sustain a safe community for residents, businesses, and visitors of North Port.
Financial Impact
Estimated costs for the care and maintenance of the donated canine will transfer from budgeted funds for retired police K-9 Dutch.
