TITLE: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding the Nomination and Election of a Mayor and Vice Mayor.

Recommended Action

Option 1: Nominate (Insert Name) to serve as Mayor and Vice Mayor.

Option 1: Move to elect (Insert Name) to serve as Mayor and Vice Mayor.

City Commission Options

Mayor

Option 1: I move to nominate (Insert Name) to serve as Mayor.
I move to elect (Insert Name) to serve as Mayor.

* Pro: Electing a Mayor provides clear leadership and accountability, ensuring the Commission has a designated representative to guide discussions and represent the City publicly.

* Con: Electing a specific individual as Mayor may create division within the Commission if members feel other candidates were overlooked or better suited for the role.

Vice-Mayor

Option 1: I move to nominate (Insert Name) to serve as Vice Mayor.
I move to elect (Insert Name) to serve as Vice Mayor.

* Pro: Electing a Vice Mayor ensures continuity of leadership by designating someone to step in when the Mayor is unavailable, maintaining stability in Commission operations.

* Con: The selection of a Vice Mayor could lead to disagreements among Commissioners if there are differing views on who is best suited, potentially causing friction within the group.

Background Information

The election for Mayor and Vice Mayor is conducted annually at the start of the new Fiscal Year. The selection is made by a majority vote of the Commissioners. During the process, nominations are opened, followed by a vote.

A rotation system is in place to give priority to Commissioners who have not recently served as Mayor or Vice Mayor, ensuring fair opportunities for leadership. The term for both positions is one year. At the conclusion of the term, the Commission reconvenes at the designated time to select new leadership for the upcoming physical year.
