TO: Honorable Mayor & Members of the North Port Commission
FROM: Peter D. Lear, CPA, CGMA, City Manager
TITLE: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Commission Compensation
Recommended Action
Discussion and possible action to suspend the automatic salary increase for Fiscal Year 20/21.
Background Information
On October 4, 2018, Ordinance 2018-22 regarding Commission compensation was formally adopted. This ordinance allows the City Commissioners’ salary to increase/decrease automatically on October 1, based on the population numbers set forth by the Bureau of Economic Business Research (BEBR) report. In the ordinance, there is a provision which allows the Commission to suspend the automatic salary increase/decrease, with a super majority vote. Mayor McDowell is confident that, with the amount of residential development in FY 19/20, the population numbers have increased; therefore, Commission salaries will automatically increase too.
COVID-19 has hit North Port citizens and businesses very hard. Many citizens have seen a reduction in their income either by reduced hours or job loss. As COVID’s financial recovery efforts continue, it is the Mayor’s opinion that any increase to commission salary sends an undesirable message to North Port citizens.
